According to education experts, lack of in-person emotional support & access to technology are often cited as significant factors for widening learning gaps. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities within the education and youth development systems, namely marginalized Black & Latinx community members who are disproportionately impacted by extended physical closures of schools and youth-serving community centers. In response, The GRYD Foundation teamed up with HACLA to re-open Nickerson Gardens Recreation Center. The boxing academy works with Black & Latinx youth and families to help students and parents connect with and navigate the online learning environment, to increase literacy, academic progress and physical fitness, and to promote family/caregiver engagement with each other, teachers, and the community.
The GRYD Boxing+STEM Academy provides FREE access to boxing and fitness equipment, nutrition, mentoring support, coaches, tutors, and technology so kids can develop confidence and become champions in sport, school and life. All programming is free of charge!
