GRYD WCC Boxing STREAM Academy @ Nickerson Gardens
Helping Youth Get Fit, Get Fast, Get Stronger, Get Smarter
According to education experts, lack of in-person emotional support & access to technology are often cited as significant factors for widening learning gaps. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities within the education and youth development systems, namely marginalized Black & Latinx community members who are disproportionately impacted by extended physical closures of schools and youth-serving community centers.
In response, Watts Community Core and The GRYD Foundation teamed up with HACLA to re-open Nickerson Gardens Recreation Center. The GRYD Foundation and Watts Community Core Boxing+STREAM programming works with Black & Latinx youth and families to help students and parents connect with and navigate the online learning environment, to increase literacy, academic progress and physical fitness, and to promote family/caregiver engagement with each other, teachers, and the community.
Boxing+STREAM provides access to technology, boxing and fitness equipment, mentoring support, tutors, coaches & trainers, nutrition, and
everything needed so kids can stay confident inside and outside
the “online” classroom. All services are free of charge!
